As of January 2012, over 600 homeless dogs have been brought into the Dewitt Animal Hospital. Approximately 100 of those strays have been adopted. The rest have been euthanized. The population of both stray dogs and cats exceed the limit the hospital can manage. The only way to control this number is by putting down the innocent ones found on the streets, which just doesn’t seem fair.
The Dewitt Animal Hospital was established in 1956 to “provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your pet”. Along with pet care, they also run an animal shelter that maintains the dogs and cats that arrive in from the Syracuse Dog Control. Due to the large number of strays they receive, canines are given only five days before they are placed on the list for possible euthanization. “Some dogs are really aggressive and some come in really sick. But when a dog gets put down simply because of time constraints, it’s really sad” Says Gerry Glasso, Veterinary Assistant at the Dewitt Animal Hospital, “We don’t always have the room and it can be costly, it’s by far the worst part of this job”. It’s easy to tell that they never wish to put a dog down, but under the circumstances they face here, there isn’t much more they can do.
When looking for a new pet, it’s important to check out your local animal shelters. First, it’s cheaper than going to a breeder or a pet store. Puppies can range from 400 to 900 dollars, sometimes even more. To adopt a dog at the Dewitt Animal Hospital, it would only cost 190 dollars. Secondly, the puppies found at pet stores and puppy mills aren’t always healthy. Employees at pet stores don’t have the knowledge to examine a puppy’s health, and neither do breeders. At the Dewitt Animal Hospital, Veterinarian Dr. Wilcox examines all dogs that come in and makes sure they are healthy enough for adoption. Lastly, it’s important to check out these animal shelters because it can save a dog’s life. This reason itself should be enough motivation.
Currently at the Dewitt Animal Hospital, there are 14 puppies and 16 dogs that are looking for a new loving home, as well as eight kittens and eight cats. You can check out these pets on Pet Finder or at their website, www.dewittanimalhospital.org. They also have a Facebook page to help spread the word even more.
